The Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) has released the results of the Waste Treatment Survey (WTS) for the year of 2021.

WTS aims to collect statistical data from businesses dealing with waste treatment (regional sanitary landfills, medical-hospital waste treatment facilities) by providing stable statistical data and creating a time series for treated waste.

The results presented in this publication provide an important statistical source for the current state of this sector.

The results from WTS 2021 indicate that: the quantity of recycled waste was 21 307 tons/year; the quantity of sterilized waste (hospital waste) was 960 tons/year; and the total quantity of waste treatment and disposal was 506 044 tons/year.

The quantity of waste treatment by type of waste and type of treatment, expressed as a percentage, was as follows: metals (14%); plastic waste (31%); hospital waste (4%); paper waste and cardboard waste (51%).

However, the quantity of waste disposal in regional sanitary landfills in 2021 was 483 777 tons/year. Compared to the data of 2020, there is an increase by 8.6%. While, compared according to the regions, the largest quantity of waste disposal was in the sanitary landfill in the region of Prishtina (Mirash), 167 371 t, or 35%.
