The Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) has released the results of the Agricultural Holdings Survey (AHS) for the year of 2021

This publication provides data on the use of agricultural land, agricultural crops, livestock and livestock outputs, agricultural inputs (mineral fertilizers, organic fertilizers, pesticides) and expenditures of agricultural holdings.

The results of this survey show that in Kosovo the used area of agricultural land was 420 326.60 hectares (including common land). Of the total used area of agricultural land, most belongs to meadows and pastures (including common land) with 51.65%, while arable land-fields participate with 44.82%; perennial crops (fruits, vineyards, seedlings) by 3.27%; and gardens by 0.29%.

Of the total arable land (188 374.71 ha), the largest part is with cereals 124 477.18 ha (66.8%); forage plants with 37 626.79 ha (20.5%); total vegetables (in open field, in greenhouses and gardens) are 10 142.42 ha, of which vegetables in open field and greenhouse are 9 053.00 ha (4.81%); potatoes 3 853.75 ha (2.05%); legumes 3 028.95 ha (1.61%); industrial plants 884.86 ha (0.47%); other crops 2 752.71 ha (1.46%) and wasteland 6 697.49 ha (3.56%).

Irrigated area or surface, at least once during the reference period of the survey, is 32 040.14 ha. Whereas, the total area treated with pesticides was 122 138.02 ha.

According to the results of the AHS in 2021, the number of cattle was 260 528 heads; of sheep was 211 354 heads; of goats was 30 039 heads; of pigs was 47 384 heads; of equine (horses, mules, donkeys) was 1 864 heads; of poultry (chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese) was 2 788 435 heads; and the total number of beehives was 219 077.

The methodology and standards applied in AHS 2021 (definitions, questionnaire, and guide) are harmonized with recommendations of Eurostat.
