Results of the Agricultural Holdings Survey, 2017

The Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) has published the results of the Agricultural Holdings Survey (AHS) for the year of 2017.

This publication provides data on the use of agricultural land, agricultural crops, livestock, agricultural inputs (mineral fertilizers, organic fertilizers, pesticides) and expenditures of agricultural holdings.

The results of this survey show that in Kosovo the utilized agricultural land area is 416 072.33 hectares (including common land). Of the total utilized area of ​​agricultural land, most of them are: meadows and pastures (including common land) by 52.5%; as well as arable land, with fields accounting for 44.9%, perennial crops (fruits, vineyards, seedlings) 2.3% and gardens with 0.3%.

Of the total arable land (186 954.16 ha), the largest is with cereals 120 746.28 ha (64.6%); forage plants with 35 998.79 ha (19.3%); total vegetables (open field, greenhouses and gardens) are 9 698.75 ha, of which open field vegetables and greenhouses are 8 499.76 ha (4.5%); potatoes 4 290.29 ha (2.3%); legumes 3 559.50 ha (1.9%); industrial plants 450.45 ha (0.2%); other crops 2 333.11 ha (1.2%) and wasteland 11 075.99 ha (5.9%).

The irrigated surface, at least once during the reference period of the survey, is 32 294.10 ha. Whereas, the total surface treated with pesticides is 115 543.24 ha.

According to the results of AHS 2017, the number of cattle is 259 729 heads; of the sheep is 182 278 heads; of goats is 28 410 heads; of pigs is 41 086 heads; of equine (horses, mules, donkeys) is 2 326 heads; poultry (chickens, turkey, ducks and geese) is 2 811 385 heads; and the total number of hives of bees is 163 717.

The methodology and standards applied in AHA 2017 (definitions, questionnaire and guidance) are harmonized with recommendations of the Eurostat.
