Municipal Waste Survey, 2018

The Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) has published the results of the Municipal Waste Survey (MWS) in 2018.

The MWS 2018 results indicate that the quantity of municipal waste collected by regional waste companies and other private economic operators dealing with municipal waste management in Kosovo in 2018 was 407 thousand tons.

Data in 2018 indicate that the average municipal waste collected in Kosovo was 227 kg per inhabitant per year.

In Prishtina and its region, the collection of municipal waste per day was 0.61 kg per inhabitant per day. Whereas in other regions of Kosovo, the quantity of municipal waste collected per day was 0.62 kg per inhabitant.

In Kosovo, the total average waste collected per capita per day was 0.62 kg / waste / inhabitant / day.

From municipal waste data, collected by region in 2018, it can be observed that the largest quantity of waste collected was in the Prishtina region, 110 thousand tons per year, or 223 kg per inhabitant per year; then in the Prizren region, at 74 thousand tons per year, or 213 kg per inhabitant per year. Whereas, the smallest quantity of waste collected was in Gjakova region with 30 thousand tons per year, or 147 kg per inhabitant per year.

In total, the quantity of municipal waste collected in 2018 has been lower by 1% compared to 2017.

In 2018, the coverage rate of households (from the municipal waste collection system) was 76%.

Meanwhile, the total quantity of waste disposal in regional landfills in 2018 was 426 thousand tons.
