Labor Force Survey in Kosovo, Q1 2017

Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) has published the results of the Labor Force Survey (LFS) for the first quarter of 2017.

The survey has been extended to 589 enumeration areas throughout the country, with 3 480 households selected randomly by the Population, Households and Dwellings Census 2011. Households selected for survey besides having a survey they also had three re-surveys according to the reference period.

This publication contains detailed data on employment and unemployment according to age, gender, employment status, economic activity, occupations and other issues related to the labor market.

According to the results of this publication, two-thirds of the population in Kosovo is a working age population. In the working age population are included ages 15-64 years.

Within the working age population, the participation rate in the workforce is 41.7%.

The employment rate in the Labor Force Survey (LFS) for the first quarter (Q1) 2017 is 28.9%.

The highest employment rate is to male (44.6%), while female employment is 13.0%. Females are employed mainly in the sectors of education, trade and health care, with 49.8% of them, while males are mainly employed in the sectors of construction, manufacturing and trade, with 43.8%.

Economic sectors which continue to employ continue to be: Trade with 14.2%; Manufacture by 13.4%; Construction with 11.2%; and Education by 9.6%. Meanwhile, other sectors participate with the lowest percentage in employment.

Concerning employees with working contract, it turns out that 31.1% of employed persons have permanent contracts in their main job, while 68.9% have a temporary contract.

According to the LFS results of Q1 2017, the unemployment rate is 30.5%.

The most pronounced unemployment is among female with 34.6%, compared with male, 29.3%. The most pronounced unemployment rate is in the age group 15-24 with 50.5%.

According to LFS results of Q1 2017, inactive force is quite high at 58.3%, with a particular focus on female by 80.2% compared with male, 36.9%.

For the implementation of LFS in Q1 2017, the methodology and standards applied by KAS are harmonized with Eurostat recommendations.
