Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices, May 2020

The Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) has published the “Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices” (HICP) in May 2020, with the base year 2015 = 100.

Monthly inflation measured by the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices was -0.3% in May 2020. The annual inflation rate measured in May 2020 with May 2019 was 0.2%.

The total Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices decreased at an average of -0.3 percent in May 2020 compared to April 2020. This is mainly explained by the decrease in consumer prices in COICOP subgroups: vegetables (-5.9%), electricity, gas and other fuels (-0.4%) - (decrease in gas and wood prices for heating), use of personal transport means (-2.6%) - (decrease in oil and gasoline prices), with a common impact of these subgroups by -0.4 percent on the HICP.

While price increases are observed in COICOP subgroups: bread and cereals (0.4%), fruits (2.1%), clothing (0.6%), household appliances (1.2%), with a common impact of these subgroups by 0.1 percent on the HICP.

Changes in the prices of products and services in some subgroups did not have any impact on the HICP.

The total Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices is 0.2% higher in May 2020 compared to May 2019. This is mainly explained by the increase in consumer prices in this period in COICOP subgroups: bread and cereals (1.9%), meat (2.7%), milk, cheese and eggs (5.9%), oils and fats (3.5%), fruit (13.3%), sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and sweets (4.7%), various food products, salts, spices, etc. (3.1%), coffee, tea and cocoa (8.0%), water, soft drinks, fruit and vegetable juices (2.6%), alcoholic beverages (0.7%), electricity, gas and other fuels (0.5%) - (increase in prices of wood for heating), household appliances (1.3%), goods and services for the usual maintenance of the household (1.5%), medical products, apparatus and equipment (5.1%), outpatient services (7.3%), purchase of vehicles (1.3%), hotel services (2.6%), personal belongings (4.1%), insurance (19 , 3%) - (increase of prices of vehicle insurance), with a joint impact of these subgroups by 2.0 percent on the HICP.

The decrease of prices have been observed in COICOP subgroups: vegetables (-10.5%), use of personal transport means (-18.8%) - (decrease of prices of oil and gasoline), with a common impact of these subgroups by -1.8 percent on the HICP.

Price changes of products and services in some subgroups did not have any impact on the HICP.
