The Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) has processed and released annual data on births, deaths, marriages and divorces in 2020, for the first time based on administrative data.

The data published in this report represent all cases of births, deaths, marriages and divorces, which occurred during 2020.

In 2020, 28 674 births were registered (inside and outside Kosovo). Of these registered births, 21 907 occurred within the territory of Kosovo, of which 11 340 were male or 51.8%, and 10 567 were female or 48.2%.

In 2020, a total of 14 514 deaths were registered (inside and outside Kosovo). Of these, 12 987 deaths occurred in Kosovo, of which 7 222 or 55.6% of cases were male and 5 765 or 44.4% of cases were female.

In 2020, a total of 14 738 marriages were registered (inside and outside Kosovo). Of these, married couples occurred in Kosovo were 13 463, where the average age of the couple was 29 years old.

In 2020, 1 614 cases of divorced couples were registered.

KAS will continue to collect data through special statistical questionnaires: for Births DEM-1, Deaths DEM-2, Marriages DEM-3, and Divorces SHK-1, during this calendar year, as before. Data collection continues on a monthly basis and will serve to create the database as well as compare it with administrative data.

The source of data of this publication is the Kosovo Civil Registration Agency, ie the Offices of Civil Status. According to the legal provisions on managing of basic registers books for Births, Deaths, Marriages and Divorces, cases are mandatory to be registered in the above-mentioned registers, in the place where the event took place, regardless of the fact that the persons related to the event have permanent residence in that place or anywhere else.

In case of using this information published in these reports, KAS will accept suggestions and proposals that will help to enrich the contents of these reports in the future.
