Agricultural Holdings Survey, 2019
The Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) has published the results of the Agricultural Holdings Survey (AHS) for the year of 2019.
In Kosovo, the used area of agricultural land is 420 141.05 hectares.
This publication provides data on use of agricultural land, agricultural crops, livestock and livestock outputs, agricultural inputs (mineral fertilizers, organic fertilizers, pesticides), labour in agriculture and expenditures of agricultural holdings.
The results of this survey indicate that in Kosovo the used area of agricultural land is 420 141.05 hectares (including common land). Of the total of used area of agricultural land, the largest part belongs to: meadows and pastures (including common land) with 51.9%; arable land with fields accounting with 44.8%; perennial crops (fruits, vineyards, seedlings) by 3.0%; and gardens by 0.3%.
Of the total arable land (188 364.69 ha), the most part is with cereals 124 198.96 ha (65.9%); forage plants with 37 496.72 ha (19.9%); total vegetables (in the open field, in greenhouses and gardens) are 9 958.80 ha, of which vegetables in the open field and greenhouses are 8 836.68 ha (4.7%); potatoes 3 688.19 ha (2.0%); legumes 2 997.00 ha (1.6%); industrial plants 401.92 ha (0.2%); other crops 2 580.42 ha (1.4%) and wasteland 8 164.80 ha (4.3%).
The irrigated area, at least once during the reference period of the survey, is 31 899.99 ha. Whereas, the total area treated with pesticides was 19 050.93 ha.
According to AHS 2019 results, the number of cattle is 257 733 heads; of sheep was 189 102 heads; of goats was 27 197 heads; of pigs was 40 538 heads; of the equine (horses, mules, donkeys) was 2 037 heads; of poultry (chickens, turkey, ducks and geese) was 2 665 262 heads; and the total number of beehives is 219 831.
Through the Agricultural Holdings Survey data were collected on labour in agriculture, depending on their commitment to output, full-time, part-time.
According to AHS 2019, the total number of people engaged in agriculture in Kosovo was 270 181. Their total contribution to agricultural labour was 82 656.98 Annual Work Units (AWU) (where 1 AwU is equal to 1 800 working hours per year / 225 working days / from eight hours per day).
The methodology and standards applied in AHS 2019 (definitions, questionnaire and guide) are harmonized with recommendations of Eurostat.
