Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices, May 2019

The Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) has published the "Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices" (HICP) in May 2019, with the base year 2015 = 100.

Monthly inflation measured by the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices was (-0.2%) in May 2019.

The total harmonized index of consumer prices decreased to an average of (-0.2%) in May 2019 compared to April 2019. This is mainly explained by the decrease in consumer prices in the COICOP subgroup: vegetables (-11.3%), with an impact of this subgroup by (-0.4%) in the HICP.

The decrease was counteracted mainly by the increase in consumer prices in COICOP subgroups: bread and cereal (0.6%); fruit (4.4%); use of personal transport means (0.8%) - (increase of oil and gasoline prices), with a common impact of these subgroups by 0.2 percent in the HICP.

The annual inflation rate measured in May 2019 with May 2018 was 3.4%.

The total harmonized index of consumer prices is higher by 3.4% in May 2019 compared to May 2018. This is mainly explained by the increase in consumer prices in this period in COICOP subgroups: bread and cereal (12.9%); meat (4.7%); milk, cheese and eggs (3.4%); vegetables (21.6%); sugar, marmalade, honey, chocolate and cakes (1.5%); coffee, tea and cocoa (3.5%); alcoholic beverages (1.5%); tobacco (3.8%); maintenance and household maintenance (2.7%); electricity, gas and other fuels (3.7%) - (increase of firewood prices); glassware, cutlery and kitchen utensils (1.6%); goods and services for household maintenance (3.9%); use of personal transport means (3.6%) - (increase of oil and gasoline prices); hotel services (1.2%); personal care (1.2%); gold and clocks (2.9%), with a common impact of these subgroups by 3.7 percent in the HICP.

The increase was counteracted mainly by the decrease in consumer prices in COICOP subgroups: fruit (-7.9%); transport services (-3.5%) - (decrease of air transport ticket prices) with a common impact of these subgroups by (-0.3%) in the HICP.
