Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), October 2017

Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) has published the "Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices" (HICP) for the month of October 2017.

Since January 2016, the harmonized index of consumer prices is published with the base year 2015 = 100.

The total harmonized index of consumer prices in the country is higher by 0.2% in October 2017 compared to September 2017. This is mainly explained by the rise of consumer prices in COICOP sub-groups: Bread and cereals (1.5%); Milk, cheese and eggs (1.8%); Vegetables (4.1%), with a common impact of these subgroups of 0.4% in the HICP.

The increase was neutralized mainly by the fall in consumer prices in COICOP subgroups: Fruits (-3.9%); Transport services (-6.1%) - (plane ticket price decline) with a common impact of these sub-groups (-0.2%) in the HICP.

The inflation rate measured in October 2017 with October 2016 was 0.9%.

The total harmonized index of consumer prices is higher by 0.9% in October 2017 compared to October 2016. This is mainly explained by some price changes of items and services of the COICOP groups and subgroups. Growth of consumer prices is observed in subgroups: Bread and cereals (2.9%); Meat (0.7%); Milk, cheese and eggs (1.9%); Oils and fats (3.4%); Fruits (10.7%); Coffee, tea and cocoa (9.9%); Mineral water, soft beverages, juices from fruits and vegetables (1.2%); Tobacco (7.3%); Use of personal transport means (2.2%) - (increase in oil and petrol prices), with a common impact of these subgroups of 1.3% in the HICP.

The rise was largely neutralized by the fall in prices in this period to subgroups: Electricity, gas and other fuels (-3.4%) - (decrease of electricity price in October 2017 by -9.5% compared to winter tariffs of October 2016); Vehicle purchase (-1.5%); Transport services (-4.3%) - (decrease of plane ticket price); Audio-visual, photographic information processing equipment (-6.5%), with a common impact of these subgroups of (-0.4%) in the HICP.

Explanation for data users 

The implementation of new retail electricity tariffs for household customers from April 1, 2017 approved by the Energy Regulatory Office of the Republic of Kosovo, dated March 31, 2017, is the cause of the change in the price of electricity each month, calculated by the Kosovo Electricity Supply Company (KES/CO).
