Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), March 2018

The Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) has published the "Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices" (HICP) for the month of March 2018.

The harmonized index of consumer prices, from January 2016, is published with the base year 2015 = 100

The total harmonized index of consumer prices is higher by 0.1% in March 2018 compared to February 2018. This is mainly explained by the slight increase in consumer prices in some of COICOP subgroups: fruits (1.4 %); use of personal transport means (0.3%); transport services (2.2%) - (plane ticket price increase); personal items (0.5%), with a common impact of these subgroups of 0.2 percent in the HICP.

The increase was counteracted mainly by the slight decrease of some consumer prices in COICOP subgroups with a common impact of (-0.1%) in the HICP.

The inflation rate, measured in March 2018, with March 2017 was 0.1%.

The total harmonized index of consumer prices is higher by 0.1% in March 2018 compared to March 2017. This is mainly explained by rising consumer prices in the COICOP subgroups: bread and cereals (1.9%); meat (1.2%); fruits (8.8%); coffee and tea (3.9%); tobacco (3.2%); use of personal transport means (0.8%); transport services (7.1%) - (plane ticket price increase) with a common impact of these subgroups of 0.8 percent in the HICP.

The rise was counteracted mainly by the fall in consumer prices in the subgroups of COICOP: sugar and cakes (-8.5%); electricity, gas and other fuels (-8.7%) - (decrease of electricity price tariffs in March 2018 by (-15.4%) compared with winter tariffs in March 2017); audio-visual, photographic and information processing equipment (-6.3%), with a common impact of these subgroups of (-0.7%) in the HICP.

Explanation for data users 

The implementation of new retail electricity tariffs for household consumers as of 1 April 2017, approved by the Energy Regulatory Office of the Republic of Kosovo, dated 31 March 2017, is the cause of the change in the price of electricity every month, calculated by the Kosovo Electricity Supply Company (KES / CO).
