Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), January 2018

Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) has published the "Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices" (HICP) for January 2018.

The harmonized index of consumer prices, from January 2016, is published with the base year 2015 = 100

The total harmonized index of consumer prices in the country is higher by 0.2% in January 2018 compared to December 2017. This is mainly explained by rising consumer prices in COICOP subgroups: fruits (1.5%); vegetables (10.2%); water supply and various services related to residence (2.5%); use of personal transport means (0.6%), with a common impact of these subgroups of 0.5 percent in the HICP.

The rise was counteracted mainly by the fall in consumer prices in the subgroups: milk, cheese and eggs (-1.2%); electricity, gas and other fuels (-1.6%); transport services (-3.1%) - (ticket price drop) with an impact of (-0.3%) in the HICP.

Inflation rate, measured in January 2018 with January 2017, was (-0.2%).

The total harmonized index of consumer prices dropped to an average of (-0.2%) in January 2018 compared to January 2017. This is mainly explained by the fall in consumer prices in this period to subgroups: milk, cheese and eggs (-3.8%); vegetables (-5.3%); sugar and confectionery (-6.4%); electricity, gas and other fuels (-8.7%) - (electricity price decrease in January 2018 by -15.5% compared to winter tariffs in January 2017); household appliances (-2.5%); audio-visual, photographic information processing equipment (-6.8%) - with a common impact of these subgroups (-1.1%) in the HICP.

Growth of consumer prices in this period is observed in subgroups: bread and cereals (3.7%); meat (0.8%); fruits (11.7%); coffee, tea and cocoa (5.7%); tobacco (3.7%); hotel services (1.8%) - with a common impact of these subgroups of 0.9% in the HICP.

Explanation for data users

The implementation of new retail electricity tariffs for household consumers from April 1, 2017 approved by the Energy Regulatory Office of the Republic of Kosovo on March 31, 2017 is the cause of the change in the price of electricity every month, calculated by the Kosovo Electricity Supply Company (KES / CO).
