Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), December 2016

Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) has published the "Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices" (HICP) for December 2016.

Since the month of January 2016, the harmonized index of consumer prices is published with base year 2015 = 100

Overall harmonized index of consumer prices in the country is higher by 0.4% in December 2016 compared with November 2016. The rose of harmonized index of consumer prices has been observed in COICOP subgroups: milk, cheese and eggs (2.1%); vegetables (6.2%); tobacco (2.2%); the use of personal transport means (1.0%) - (rising price of oil and gasoline) with a common impact of these subgroups of 0.5 percent in the HICP.

The increase was counteracted mainly by decreases of subgroup of bread and cereals (-0.8%) with an impact of (-0.1%) in the HICP.

The inflation rate measured in the month of December 2016 with December 2015 was 1.3%.

Overall harmonized index of consumer prices is higher for 1.3% in December 2016 compared with December 2015. In this period there are some changes in prices of items and services to COICOP groups and subgroups. Increase of prices has been noted to subgroups: meat (1.0%); milk, cheese and eggs (4.8%); sugar and sweets (9.4%); coffee, tea and cocoa (3.1%); tobacco (8.3%); clothing (3.2%); electricity, gas and other fuels (1.0%); use of personal transport means (5.4%) - (rising price of oil and gasoline), transport services (6.3%) - (rising price of plane tickets), with a common impact of these subgroups of 1.7% in the HICP.

The increase was counteracted mainly by decreases of prices in this period of the COICOP subgroups: bread and cereals (-1.5%); vegetables (-4.0%); audio-visual and photographic equipment for information processing (-3.4%), with a common impact of these subgroups of (-0.4%) in the HICP.

Annual average inflation rate in 2016 was 0.3%.

Overall harmonized index of consumer prices in the country in 2016 was higher, at an average of 0.3%, compared with 2015. The increase of consumer price index in this period is observed in COICOP subgroups: meat (1.5%); oils and fats (2.5%); sugar and sweets (8.8%); beverages (1.8%); alcoholic beverages (7.2%); tobacco (8.8%); clothing (2.8%); furniture and furnishing, carpets and other floor coverings (2.0%); medical products and equipment (2.4%); transport services (5.4%) - (rising price of plane tickets) with a common impact of 1.3% in the HICP.

But, decrease of the harmonized index of consumer prices in this period is observed in subgroups: bread and cereals (-2.6%); fruits (-3.5%); vegetables (-6.1%); water supply and various services related to residence (-4.5%); electricity, gas and other fuels (-2.7%); escalation of VAT by 8.0% from September of 2015 to some items and services that contributed to declining inflation in a move of (-0.4%) in 2016; use of personal transport means (-4.7%), with a common impact of 1.0% in the HICP.
